Not All Board Certification is the Same – Orlando Plastic Surgeon Explains

Orlando, FL — The American Board of Plastic Surgery encourages board-certified plastic surgeons to keep their medical knowledge current by requiring them to update their certification every ten years. However, he notes that not all plastic surgeons are required to renew their certification, explaining that physicians certified prior to 1995 are considered to have a “lifetime” certification.

Over the years, the American Board of Plastic Surgery has been consistently recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) as the only organization responsible for training and certifying plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani encourages patients to be aware of their surgeon’s credentials, explaining that several other sub-specialty boards exist, but unlike the American Board of Plastic Surgery, these other organizations have not met the strict requirements of the ABMS for testing and training. According to the Orlando plastic surgeon, some of these unapproved organizations require no more than a fee in order for surgeons to become certified.

He says this provides patients with the opportunity to become well-informed and find a surgeon that can best assist them in achieving their aesthetic goals, and reminds patients to be mindful during this time, stating, “If you meet with a surgeon who says they have 20+ years of experience, I hope you will remember to follow up with the appropriate questions about their certification.”
