BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, minimally invasive approach to smoothing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead. The most popular non-surgical enhancement treatment available, BOTOX® Cosmetic can give you a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani, our experienced Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, offers this quick, in-office treatment for patients who are looking for more subtle facial enhancement that does not involve an extensive recovery process.

HOW DOES BOTOX® COSMETIC WORK?

BOTOX® Cosmetic works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkling, primarily in the forehead and “crow’s feet” (lateral eye skin) area. This gives the skin an even, rejuvenated appearance. During treatment, BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the affected area with a tiny needle. A topical numbing agent can be applied to the skin in order to minimize discomfort. The entire procedure takes only about 15 minutes or less to complete, depending on the number of areas being treated.

WHAT CONCERNS CAN BOTOX® COSMETIC ADDRESS?

Wrinkles and fine lines caused by overactive facial muscles can be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. The most popular treatment sites are typically in very expressive regions of the face, such as the eyes and forehead. This wrinkle-relaxing injectable is best-suited to smooth:

  • Frown lines
  • Brow creases
  • Crow’s feet

BOTOX® Cosmetic may not be the best treatment for other facial aging concerns, such as volume loss and deep creases; however, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani can treat marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and flattened contours with Restylane® and other hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Right for Me?

As a non-surgical treatment that offers temporary results, BOTOX® Cosmetic can help a broad range of patients look and feel more rejuvenated. Although BOTOX® Cosmetic can beautifully smooth wrinkles surrounding the eyes, brow, and upper face, it may not be the best solution to treat deeper creases and other signs of aging — such as loss of facial volume. In addition, BOTOX® Cosmetic is most successful for men and women who:

  • Are healthy
  • Have realistic expectations for what BOTOX® Cosmetic can achieve
  • Aren’t ready for a surgical treatment
  • Are able to tolerate injections
  • Have no underlying nerve or muscle disorders

This injectable may not be a good wrinkle-reducing treatment for those who are actively pregnant and/or breastfeeding. That said, your injector can closely examine your concerns and listen to your goals to confirm whether or not BOTOX® Cosmetic is enough to achieve your desired results. We also offer other injectable treatments, such as Dysport®, to address mild signs of aging in the face.

BOTOX® COSMETIC VS. DYSPORT®

Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are wrinkle-relaxing injectables that can help you look younger and more refreshed. These two treatments have many similarities, including their injection processes, potential side effects, and minimal periods of downtime; however, slight differences exist between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® that may make it easier to distinguish the best treatment for your needs. Aside from the disparity in each product’s amount of trace proteins, the biggest distinctions between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are the treatable concerns and immediacy of results achieved with each injectable.

While BOTOX® Cosmetic can treat several types of wrinkles around the eyes and brow, Dysport® is typically most successful when targeting frown lines or small wrinkles around the mouth and chin. That said, both are capable of effectively addressing moderate to severe wrinkles, and the injection process for each product is essentially the same. Some patients report seeing results relatively sooner with Dysport® injections when compared to BOTOX® Cosmetic, which typically takes three to four days before effects become apparent. Although this is the experience of some individuals, how soon you are able to notice results ultimately depends on your concerns and the unique quality of your skin.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER BOTOX® COSMETIC?

There are very few side effects associated with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, and there is no apparent scar or mark at the injection site. Although some redness and swelling may be present after treatment, this should dissipate quickly. Most patients can resume normal daily routines immediately. *Optimal results from BOTOX® Cosmetic are typically noticeable within a few days after treatment, and the effects can last three to four months. Results can be maintained with follow-up BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.

Is There Downtime After BOTOX® Cosmetic?

No, there is no recovery period or extensive downtime required after BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. The ability to resume daily activities right away is one benefit that BOTOX® Cosmetic patients greatly appreciate, and many individuals simply receive injections during their lunch hour. That said, our team advises avoiding exercise and other strenuous activity for a few hours after treatment. Your injector will let you know what to expect after your appointment and how to maximize the final results. Some swelling may be apparent for a few hours afterwards, but BOTOX® Cosmetic is performed in-office and does not involve any incisions. This eliminates the need for a recovery period or healing process.

How Often Should I Get BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?

Each treatment plan is personalized according to your unique details — specifically, the depth of your wrinkles, the amount of product injected, and the nature of your aesthetic goals. Many patients undergo injections three to four times per year, but you may also find that receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic twice a year is enough to obtain your ideal results. Deeper or more severe signs of frown lines and crow’s feet may require more frequent injections when compared to correcting mild wrinkling. After consulting with our BOTOX® Cosmetic injector, you both will work together to formulate an optimal injection plan best-suited to your unique needs.

ARE THERE ANY BOTOX® COSMETIC SIDE EFFECTS?

Some side effects, typically very minor, can occur and should fade quickly. These include some minimal bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites. These symptoms often resolve within hours or a day, and they can be covered with makeup if desired. Many patients schedule their appointment over a lunch break once they realize how quickly the procedure can be performed and how brief the recovery lasts.

HOW LONG DOES BOTOX® COSMETIC LAST?

The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic can typically last three to four months, although the results will vary from patient to patient. The longevity of the outcome often increases the more frequently patients undergo touch-up treatments. A few simple tips can help extend the rejuvenation achieved with BOTOX® Cosmetic, including using sun protection daily, abstaining from smoking, and applying quality skincare products to optimize the health of the skin. Wearing sunglasses has also been known to reduce how often patients have to squint and furrow their brow while outdoors, helping prevent the deepening of expression lines.

HOW MUCH DOES BOTOX® COSMETIC COST?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is priced according to how many units are needed to achieve your goals, with the cost typically ranging between $10 to $15 per unit. In general, frown lines and wrinkles in the forehead often require more units of product to smooth than crow’s feet, but this all depends on the extent of your concerns. At any rate, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani accepts third-party plastic surgery financing from CareCredit® to make BOTOX® Cosmetic expenses more manageable. Rather than pay upfront in a lump sum, CareCredit® allows qualified patients to fund their treatment through low monthly installments as part of a long- or short-term payment plan. A member of our office would be happy to discuss our financing and payment options with you, so please don’t hesitate to contact our practice for more information.

What is a “BOTOX® Brow Lift”?

A “BOTOX® brow lift” is a method of temporarily rejuvenating the brow through injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Since this product is popularly used to smooth deep creases and fine lines along the forehead, many patients inquire whether BOTOX® Cosmetic is also capable of replicating the results of a surgical brow lift. While the muscle-relaxing properties of BOTOX® Cosmetic may have a slight lifting effect on the brow, the outcome of treatment is usually limited in what can be achieved.

If you have moderate to severe drooping of the eyebrows, BOTOX® Cosmetic will not be able to significantly restore them to a more rejuvenated positioning. Effectively reducing a heavy brow will typically require surgery to remove excess skin and lift drooping musculature. However, do not hesitate to speak with Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani about whether your concerns can potentially be addressed by BOTOX® Cosmetic or another injectable during a consultation. While BOTOX® Cosmetic is generally better suited to treat wrinkles and creases in expressive regions of the face, some amount of “lift” may still be achieved after the muscles responsible for frown lines are relaxed.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Safe?

Yes, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been FDA-approved for decades and is the most heavily researched injectable of its kind. With use of BOTOX® Cosmetic sanctioned in over 98 countries, there are over 528 peer-reviewed studies in scientific and medical journals that all support the safety and efficacy of treatment. Still, the importance of undergoing injections with a qualified provider is not to be understated. BOTOX® Cosmetic is only considered a safe and predictable anti-aging treatment when administered by a qualified nurse injector or board-certified plastic surgeon. Receiving treatment from a certified medical professional not only helps ensure the correct amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic are injected in the proper locations, but it can also give you the confidence of knowing you are receiving the highest standard of care. These factors are key to achieving a result that doesn’t look unnatural or overdone.
