Orlando Plastic Surgeon Discusses Silicone Gel Implants

According to the latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 62% of the 318,123 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2010 used silicone breast implants. At his Orlando plastic surgery practice, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani says his patients chose silicone over saline implants at roughly the same percentage, and often attribute their choice to the more natural appearance and soft touch of the new silicone gel implants.

The most recent data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010, with breast augmentation highlighted at the most popular form of surgical aesthetic enhancement. Of the 318,123 procedures performed, 62% of patients chose silicone breast implants, a statistic Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Orlando, FL, says is reflected at his practice.

Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani attributes this propensity for silicone breast implants to a more natural look and feel of the new generation of implants, which now use a cohesive silicone gel. “There are two main differences between the new generation of silicone implants and the silicone implants of the past. The first is that the outer shell or covering of the implant is thicker than the shell previously used, thus the rupture rate is lessened. The other difference is that the composition of the newer implant is not as “liquid” as before, and therefore more cohesive. Should a rupture occur or the integrity of the shell be compromised, the gel will remain intact.”

While his patients prefer silicone implants, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani stresses the importance of patient education during the consultation process. “Educating patients is a key component during my consultation. I want my patients to understand that silicone does not correlate to any disease processes. Knowing this information alone eases anxieties for many patients.”

Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani says patients often enter his practice with certain expectations concerning the breast augmentation procedure, armed with some basic facts about silicone breast implants. While they are most concerned with the safety of silicone implants, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani says he is quick to reassure his patients that the silicone implants of today are very different from those used in the past. “Patients are often times concerned whether certain autoimmune diseases are associated with the use of silicone implants. Again with effective communication and thorough understanding, the issue of safety has been resolved. Cost is also another factor of concern for patients. Silicone implants do cost more than saline implants. The choice of using saline or silicone implants is a patient’s personal decision. My goal is to educate patients and help them understand so they are able to make an informed decision.”
