You’ve probably heard that when having cosmetic surgery it is important to have a plastic surgeon who is board certified. But what does board certification really mean? Why is it so important? One of the most important reasons is for your own safety. Doctors who are board certified are held to certain standards that can help to keep you, the patient, safe. This certification also means that your physician has gone through rigorous training. This helps patients to be sure that their doctor is knowledgeable and skilled in the area of medicine they specialize in. Aesthetic plastic surgeons should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only organization recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for certifying plastic surgeons. When considering plastic surgery, finding the surgeon who you are most comfortable with is important. You want to feel confident in his or her skill, as well. Before moving forward with any cosmetic surgery, I always recommend for patients to conduct thorough research. Talk to friends and family members who have had a positive experience with a surgeon, and look online for doctors in your area (or beyond, if you’re willing and able to travel). Once you’ve selected a few surgeons, look into each physician’s education, experience, and professional background. Review before and after photos, read through patient reviews and testimonials, and don’t forget to check the doctor’s board certification. Plastic surgeons should always be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Schedule a... Continue Reading
Although some physicians are not required to do so, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani, explains why it is important for plastic surgeons to renew their board certifications every ten years. If you have been considering plastic surgery, you have probably realized board certification is an important credential to look for when researching doctors. Although this certification is extremely important to consider, knowing when the plastic surgeon was certified is another important fact of which to be aware. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has consistently recognized the American Board of Plastic Surgery as the only medical sub-specialty board responsible for the certification and training of plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Board certification must be renewed every ten years to maintain the highest... Continue Reading
In Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani’s last blog post, he outlined some important information to consider when selecting the appropriate breast implant size for your breast augmentation procedure. In the second installment of this 2-part blog series, he discusses how to choose the shape that will best create the look you want to achieve: My patients often worry about selecting the right size when it comes to breast implants, but size isn’t the only thing to be considered these days. With advancements in cosmetic surgery procedures, there are now many options available for patients considering breast enhancement. Breast implants also now have a variety of shapes, textures, and profile options. Some patients prefer teardrop-shaped implants over the more traditional round implants, because they feel it provides... Continue Reading
When breast augmentation patients are deciding what breast implant size to choose, there are many important factors to consider. Many patients make the common mistake of thinking that a certain volume translates the same way for all people. For example, if a patient’s friend got 350cc, and they think their friend’s breasts look too large, that same volume might not necessarily look too large on them. On that same note, if they like the way a friend’s implants turned out, saying they want the same breast implants as their friend might not be the right choice, either. It is important to remember that everyone’s body is different, so the same size implant will look different on various body shapes and sizes. When selecting the appropriate... Continue Reading

Last Friday we posted the following scenario on Facebook: Mrs. Kendall Doubledee undergoes saline breast augmentation a couple of days ago. She is hearing what sounds like 'swishing', 'sloshing', 'water-like' noises. What should Kendall do? "Sloshing" or "Water-Like" noises coming from the breasts after breast implant surgery is quite common because air gets into the pocket during surgery. Additionally, during surgery the pocket is irrigated with saline and it is the combination of this residual fluid that is remaining and the air that gives the "sloshing" noise postoperatively. There is no harm in this and nothing to worry about. Both the air and the fluid will be reabsorbed by your body over the first few weeks after surgery. About Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani Dr. Jon... Last Friday we asked our Facebook fans if 21 year-old Miss Jessica Smith can have silicone implants. The answer to this is MAYBE. Yes, Jessica needs to be 22 years old to undergo breast augmentation using silicone implants IF this is her first time having breast augmentation and if this was strictly for cosmetic purposes. However, if Jessica was having revisionary surgery or reconstructive surgery then she is able to have silicone implants despite her age. The FDA approved silicone gel-filled breast implants for increasing breast size (augmentation) in women age 22 or older and for reconstruction (after breast cancer surgery or other medical issues) in ALL women. Silicone implants are also approved for revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original... Continue Reading
