Misconceptions About Liposuction

Liposuction is perhaps the most popular cosmetic procedure in the country. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), liposuction was the top cosmetic surgery performed in 2022 for the second year in a row.* Still, there are a number of misconceptions about what liposuction entails, as well as what patients can expect from the final results. If you’re considering surgical fat removal, it’s important to learn the truth behind the procedure and debunk the most prevailing liposuction myths, which generally include:  You cannot gain weight after liposuction. As a body contouring surgery, liposuction does nothing to prevent weight gain. While the fat cells removed are gone forever, surrounding fat cells can still grow larger or smaller. Patients can certainly experience weight... Continue Reading

Does a Tummy Tuck Get Rid of C-Section Scars?

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, can be an excellent procedure to improve the shape, tone, contour, and profile of the abdomen. Aging, weight gain, and pregnancy can all have a number of effects on the tone and texture of the belly, often resulting in reduced self-confidence for a wide range of patients. Women who have had children, in particular, are commonly concerned with the appearance of their stomach after a cesarean section (“C-section”) procedure, which may leave a “pooch” of excess skin above the incision, along with a loose or crepey skin texture. In general, a tummy tuck may be able to remove a C-section scar depending on the nature of a patient’s needs and individual treatment plan; however, it’s important to note that even... Will I Need to Replace My Implants in the Future?

Breast implants can offer a life-changing enhancement to your curves and confidence, allowing women dissatisfied with their chest to achieve the youthful, voluptuous breast contours they’ve always desired. Unfortunately, saline and silicone implants are not infallible. While capable of providing beautiful, long-term results, breast implants were not designed to be lifetime devices. Over time, certain issues may affect your implants and warrant a secondary breast revision procedure; however, the majority of patients do not ever feel a need to replace their breast implants unless they want to exchange their devices for a newer type, size, or fill-material.  After breast augmentation, most women don’t experience severe problems that warrant replacing their implants. However, the following complications may require additional treatment to further improve the outcome: Rippling:... Continue Reading

Does a Breast Lift Make Your Breasts Smaller?

Breast lift surgery, or “mastopexy,” is one of the most sophisticated procedures to address signs of aging in the breasts, such as skin inelasticity, excess glandular tissue, and an overall loss of support. By removing redundant fat, skin, and tissue causing ptosis (or drooping), mastopexy can provide a firmer and younger-looking breast profile. That said, some patients wonder whether the removal of excess tissue adjunctively results in a smaller breast size. A breast lift does not significantly decrease the proportions of the breasts; rather, the procedure seeks to improve changes in the breasts caused by the natural aging process, such as flat or elongated breast contours. While the main objective of a breast lift is not to obtain a smaller breast size, the procedure is... Continue Reading

ISAPS Issues Patient Safety Statement on Breast Implants

According to recent data published in The Aesthetic Surgery Journal, there has been a worldwide increase in patients seeking to remove their breast implants through en bloc capsulectomy or another explantation procedure. The motivations behind patients’ request for breast implant removal lie in systemic symptoms — such as joint pain, autoimmune diseases, confusion, chronic fatigue, and muscle aches — attributed to their breast implants. While not enough data is available to determine individual risk factors for conditions such as Breast Implant Illness (BII) and Silicone Incompatibility Syndrome (SOS), self-described symptoms have been associated with all types of implants, including saline, silicone, gel-filled, smooth, and textured devices. In some patients, removing breast implants has been shown to improve or even eliminate their symptoms. ISAPS states that... Continue Reading

Will I Gain Weight After Liposuction?

female waistline about to perform liposuction

Many people grapple with stubborn fat that just doesn’t seem to go away with dieting and exercise. To combat that concern, liposuction addresses excess fat pockets to create a more toned figure and enhanced contour. The popular cosmetic procedure targets unwanted bulges and fat buildup in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, neck, and arms by removing fat cells. Additional benefits include the procedure’s effectiveness for both men and women, little to no recovery time, and a low risk of serious side effects. With less invasive techniques than many other surgeries, liposuction has become a widely utilized and sought after body contouring surgery. At The Aesthetic Surgery Centre, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Jon Paul Trevisani, MD can sculpt and contour your body to help you achieve... Continue Reading

How Do Breasts Change with Age?

As we age, our bodies change in response to some of life’s biggest moments. Specifically, the appearance of firm and youthful breasts can fluctuate with age and multiple factors usually contribute to these developments. From pregnancy and breastfeeding to weight fluctuations, the breast contours tend to look flatter and less shapely over time. Menopause and the natural aging process are also contributing factors, especially when the body starts producing less estrogen. While the age-related changes to your breasts vary from patient to patient according to genetics and unique lifestyle factors, there are certain concerns widely shared by women as they get older. Many patients want to improve: Breasts that look elongated, have lost volume, or appear deflated A decrease in skin elasticity and firmness Nipples... Continue Reading
