Does a Breast Lift Require Breast Implants?

Breast LiftLoose, inelastic skin developing in the breasts is a very common occurrence, and many women begin to feel very self-conscious when the breasts take on a “sagging” appearance. Often due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, genetics, weight loss, or even just the toll that gravity and the natural aging process eventually takes on the body, the effects of excess skin among the breasts can be significantly reduced and improved with breast lift surgery. When this option is considered by women here at the Aesthetic Surgery Centre, one of the most common questions we receive is: “Are breast implants necessary as part of a breast lift?”

The answer ultimately depends on one’s individual needs and goals; but, in general, the answer is no. Breast lift surgery and breast augmentation are two completely different procedures and, while the combination of the two treatments may be necessary to meet one person’s goals, a breast lift alone may be enough to yield satisfactory results in others.

Breast lift surgery is designed to address breast ptosis (sagginess). The procedure essentially removes excess skin and redrapes the remaining skin, lifting the breasts to a higher position and giving them a smoother, firmer, more youthful appearance. The nipples can also be relocated to a higher area of the breasts during a breast lift, and stretched areolar skin (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple) can be minimized.

Breast augmentation surgery utilizes breast implants to add volume to the breasts. For women who would like to enlarge the breasts in addition to reducing signs of sagging and give the breasts a “perkier” appearance, a combined breast lift with implants surgery may be the ideal option. It is not uncommon for women to combine these procedures for a completely renewed appearance to the breasts; however, it may not be necessary for your individual goals.

Once you have met with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani, he will perform a comprehensive evaluation and talk with you about your goals. He will answer all your questions and explain the most ideal options in detail. While a combination of breast lift and breast augmentation procedures may best serve your interests, it’s also possible that only one or the other is necessary. Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani will make the best recommendation possible based on your needs.
