What Breast Implants To Choose – Saline or Silicone?

Last Friday the first trivia question was posted on our Facebook Page to start off the “Feeling Fit and Fabulous” Contest and plenty of responses came flooding! The question was ‘When considering breast implants would you choose Saline or Silicone, and tell us why?’

At the Aesthetic Surgery Centre by Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani, patients are choosing silicone over saline implants. Dr. Jon Paul Trevisani attributes this propensity for silicone breast implants to a more natural look and feel of the new generation of implants, which now use a cohesive silicone gel. “There are two main differences between the new generation of silicone implants and the silicone implants of the past. The first is that the outer shell or covering of the implant is thicker than the shell previously used, thus the rupture rate is lessened. The other difference is that the composition of the newer implant is not as “liquid” as before, and therefore more cohesive. Should a rupture occur or the integrity of the shell be compromised, the gel will remain intact.”

While Dr. Jon’s patients prefer silicone implants, he stresses the importance of patient education during the consultation process. “Educating patients is a key component during my consultation. I want my patients to understand that silicone does not correlate to any disease processes. Knowing this information alone eases anxieties for many patients.” It is important to know and understand that silicone implants of today are very different than those used in the past. Patients are often times concerned whether certain autoimmune diseases are associated with the use of silicone implants. Again, with effective communication and thorough understanding, the issue of safety has been resolved.

The implants differ in cost and material/consistency. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty, and then filled once they are in place. Silicone implants as discussed earlier are pre-filled with silicone gel — a thick fluid that is more cohesive than the past silicone implants and it is this thick substance that closely mimics the feel of human fat. Generally speaking, silicone implants will give you a more natural appearance and feel than the saline implants. Most women truly believe that silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue. The most common reasons women choose silicone implants are for the natural feel, less rippling to the implant aka ‘wrinkling’ of the implant and no risk of deflation.

If you want your breasts to look and feel as natural as possible, silicone is probably a better option for you as long as you are comfortable with the following. Silicone implants are more expensive because medical-grade silicone is very expensive to produce. Ultimately, however, the choice between saline and silicone is up to the patient.
